Chuckanut Brewery | Bellingham, WA
ABV: 5% | IBU: 20 | Red Ale
It was wonderful in the 1700’s when clean tasting malts became available, but malt dried over wood fires never disappeared. The heart of “Smoked” beer lies in Bamberg, Germany where Rauch Bier is the choice drink! Beech wood is gathered from the surrounding forests and used to fuel the smoke houses where the malt is dried. The resulting beers are light to dark brown, with quietly intense smokiness backed by malt in the nose. In Rauch Bier, rich malty smoke dominates the palate, with an undertone of fruity notes, and the beer finishes nice and dry. These beers are assertive, unique, and fascinating, but are surprisingly delicious!
#2 Fest Bier
ABV: 5% | IBU: 22 | Other
Beer has played a central role in Germany's Oktoberfest festivities since their inception in 1810 as a celebration of the wedding of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the Saxon-Hildburghausen Princess Therese. Oktoberfest has grown from a five-day event, anchored by a horse race, into the world's largest beer fest, drawing more than 6 million people each year to Munich. In the early days, the beer consumed during Oktoberfest was the rich, malty copper-colored lager known as Marzen. But in recent years, the official Oktoberfest lager has morphed into a lighter, golden lager with a moderate malty sweetness and a clean, balancing bitterness. Chuckanut Oktoberfest or Fest Beer emphasizes the use of Vienna malts for a smooth, quaffable fest beer. The aroma and flavor are lightly sweet with a hint of noble hops. This medium-bodied beer finishes crisp and smooth.
